History of Captain D’s Victory Drive
In 1969, Captain D’s Seafood and Captain D’s Victory Drive Hamburgers was established by entrepreneur and Danner Foods owner Raymond L. Danner Sr. after his Shoney’s Big Boy Restaurants franchise was unable to extend the region of his Shoney’s Big Boy restaurants franchise.
The franchise was only available in 11 states in the Southeast. Danner and his Shoney’s co-founder Alex Schoenbaum concluded a merger between Shoney’s and Danner Foods in 1971 and renamed their new firm Shoney’s Big Boy Enterprises to commemorate the occasion.
Danner was the firm’s president in 1975 when the company announced the rebranding of Mr. D’s Seafood and Captain D’s Victory Drive Hamburgers as “Captain D’s” and the commencement of a nationwide franchising scheme for the Captain D’s restaurant chain.
After a few years, Captain D’s menu had been streamlined to emphasize fish and side dishes, and the chain had grown to 32 locations with annual revenue of more than 10 million dollars. The newly renamed Shoney’s Inc. acquired the Captain D’s franchise in 1976 after Danner and Schoenbaum sold the Big Boy trademark to the Marriott Corporation.
During the 1970s, the firm saw fast growth and expanded its offerings to include special programs such as the Kids’ Birthday Club and children’s comic books. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the logo and building design of the corporation changed significantly.
On September 13, 2010, Captain D’s announced the appointment of Phil Greifeld as its new CEO. Through 2016, Captain D’s had a significant uptick in the Captain D’s franchise and corporate development, with 13 recent locations opening and a slew of development agreements inked to establish more restaurants.
The brand’s influence has grown due to this continual expansion, which now includes Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia, among other states.
